Type of a scam Online Purchase
My name is ******* ***** *****Â my phone number is ************. Today I called Roku after purchasing a Roku TV I soon found out that Roku was asking for an activation code to use the TV. The TV give me the activation code and the website to go to to put it in Roku TV/activate. When I punch the code in it said problem and call the number that I listed above. I called Roku and a man named Roy answered. I told him that I was having trouble using my TV. he told me that the problem was an easy fix all I had to do was set up a Roku account. We began setting up the account and then he proceeded to ask me for a $79 one-time activation fee. I told him I don’t want to pay $79 I just want to use the TV without attaching the Roku account. He said this was impossible. I asked to speak to his supervisor and he hung up. I felt like this was a scam to get me to pay more money on top of the purchase of the TV. I called back and spoke to a woman and asked if I could file a complaint about a man named Roy she said yes and then hung up. I would have gladly made a complaint with their supervisor but they wouldn’t allow me to. After speaking to BestBuy I quickly found out that I could use the TV without having to connect the internet. I’m grateful to Best Buy for telling me the truth. Roku explicitly said that the TV cannot be used unless I pay that $79. To me this is something that needs to be reported I know there is plenty of people that will take them at face value. I’m not sure what this action will produce but I felt strongly about needing to tell my story.
