Type of a scam Fake Invoice/Supplier Bill

We initially received a request for 300 Kg. Vitamin B-2 from this scammer, pretending to represent UC Davis Medical Center. When calling the number provided, the person who answered said he got our name from an internet search. At the time we did not know it was as scam so we proceeded to locate a product and price, after which they sent a Purchase Order that looked legitimate. They wanted to pay on Net 30 days so we received credit and Bank references including actual D&B and Tax ID numbers, but none of the references checked out. We got more suspicious when the order indicated product delivery to a different address, which after checking was really a private address not related the the University of California. I called the individuals the scammers pretended to represent via the University switchboard, who turned out to be different people who had never placed an order for this item, nor do they use it. They also confirmed the e-mail address used does not correspond to their directory. We were lucky not fall for this since we did not ship anything.
