Type of a scam Family/Friend Emergency

The scammer called my in-laws and a young man said " do you know who’s calling?" When she answered with her grandson’s name, he went on to say he had been arrested in Trent, SC for being in a rental car with friends that was speeding and had drugs. He needed money sent so he could be released. He stressed the need to not tell his parents, he would tell them later. Then a man got on the phone who identified himself as Mark Davis, an Bailiff Officer with a badge number of 2309. He sounded sympathetic and said that he understood they could not come to Trent to post bail and offered a solution. Supposedly one of the other kids in the car was already released after his grandparents did this. He said they needed to get gift cards and when he called back at 1pm, to give him the numbers on the card and their grandson would be released. He supposedly looked on-line for a place to do this and suggested a Best Buy near them where they could get two $2,000 gift cards. Also, he said to not contact the parents. The Best Buy employee was very astute and knew it to be a scam and they called me (the parent).
