Type of a scam Tech Support
A caller from a company identifying itself as Smart Snake (caller ID recorded ‘Network Wings’) falsely claims customer’s computer has been hacked to obtain an agreement to download software to fix customer’s allegedly hacked computer for a subscription fee. In this particular case the company attempted to obtain permission from another family member to download more software for an additional fee to fix or repair hacking, after they are allowed access to the customer’s computer under the guise of fulfilling their duty to the family member who months previously purchased over $350 worth of service. When the caller’s validity was challenged the caller became irritated and the lies or intimidation worsened. The most blatant and final lie alerting the customer was when the caller used the console log from the customer’s Mac computer as evidence the computer had been hacked as they claimed. The log used by the caller was recorded (screen grabbed) during the call by the customer and sent to an Apple Senior Analyst (aka programmer) for further verification the log held no proof the computer had been hacked.
