Type of a scam Tech Support
For the past few months, I have been receiving 10 to 12 calls or more every week to my land-line phone number, all from the same 1-408-606-5775 number. Caller ID shows as either Apple Inc or shows the same phone number in place of a name. Upon answering, a recorded female voice indicates that my Apple iCloud account is showing signs of "unusual" activity and has been hacked/compromised. The recording advises pressing "1" to immediately connect to an "Apple support advisor", or to call back later to another number, 1-800-917-9837. As I’m familiar with most of the phone scams making the rounds, I do not respond in any way. And after the first few calls, I’ve simply stopped answering them.
Some of the obvious tip-offs to this scam are: the fact that my land-line number is not registered anywhere with any Apple-related account, and no calls have been made to my cell phone number associated with my account; the recording addresses me as "dear customer", and not by name; I have received no emails indicating any issues with any Apple-related account; the only activities which could take place on my iCloud account are uploading/downloading content, changing my password or updating minimal personal information, none of which involve any sensitive data such as Social Security numbers, banking information, etc.
