Type of a scam Phishing
Called spoofing the Rapid City Police Department caller ID (which was the non-emergency dispatch), and had the instructions to call back at a different number, (605) 620-7455, and was using a police officer’s name in Rapid City. Stated that I had two warrants for my arrest for failure to appear and contempt of court by the US District Court for a June 4th hearing and I needed to pay my $6,060 surety bond and convert the case from criminal to civil. Required constant contact on the cell phone and stated a gag order was in place. I was advised I was served a subpoena on 5/19/2020 at my house to be an expert witness in a case involving a juvenile. If I hung up the phone or talked to anyone about what was going on, I would be arrested as I’m a criminal in the eyes of the law and would have to handle the warrants in criminal court. Even if I denied the service, I would have to pay the surety bond, which would be repaid immediately, and sign a affidavit that it wasn’t my signature on the service. I was instructed to go to my car and withdraw cash from my bank or provide proof that I did not have money to pay. I felt this was a scam and stated I had to hang up the phone to call my bank for a withdrawal limit increase. I called my son instead who is in law enforcement and there was no warrants for my arrest. The guy he was posing as had the day off. I called back and played along that I got the money and he wanted me to go to his retail partners to deposit the cash that he assured me would be repaid. I told him I felt more comfortable handing it to him in person at the station and said it sounded like a scam. He assured me it was not and I said that I was hanging up and they can arrest me if needed. He called back 20-minutes later and changed his rank from sgt to lt. I called him a scammer and he cussed me out. Wasted 2-hours of his time!
