Enclosed are papers from scam artists. I had ignored or trashed them. I was so excited, because I thought I had won enough money to repair our church in VA. We need a lot of money for repairs its only about 22 of us. None are rich. The letter came from publishers clearing house, so I thought . I have entered so many contests from them (PCH). I sure hope you will be able to find a way to warn seniors and other citizens so they won’t get caught up in this scam.It was not until I had given out some important information that it sank into my head that I was being scammed.

Type of a scam Sweepstakes/Lottery/Prizes

I got a phone call from what they claimed to be "Publishers Clearing House" asking if I had signed up recently. I said yes since I had quite some time ago. They said congratulation you’ve won *** Million dollars can we deliver it to you? I wanted to keep them on the line and learn more so I played along and told them I had moved to LA recently. They hung up. Maybe five minutes later I got a call from the same man telling me his name was Donald Franklin and he was the manager of Publishers Clearing House. They then led me down to my car to beep the horn two times in order to verify security for a ScamPulse.com recording that they were making for "security purposes". I told them, this is a scam and you are doing a terrible job of convincing me otherwise. Donald replied by saying no we are just taking all the necessary steps to make you a happy man and this is when I requested to speak with his boss. I was transferred to, the transfer being him muting the phone until he found someone for me to talk to, a man claiming to be the CEO of Publishers Clearing House named James Kingston. Once he told me this and I asked two more times if he was claiming to be the CEO of Publishers Clearing House I had to break the bad news that the Ceo of Publishers Clearing House is, in fact, Andrew Goldberg. This is the moment that he decided to hang up finally.

Type of a scam Fake Check/Money Order

Received a letter in the mail postmarked from Nashville, Tennessse. No return address on the envelope. The correspondence included a legitimate looking check and a letter from "Publishers Clearing House (PCH)", indicating we had won second prize (2.5 million) in the PCH *** million dollar super cash giveaway promotion. The enclosed check (for $***) was apparently to cover "insurance and attorney fees". The letter included 2 telephone numbers and a security code. We were instructed to contact the "claims manager" BEFORE depositing the check. I called both numbers and reached unmonitored voice mailboxes. I am hoping the number I called from was not automatically recorded so they don’t try to contact me. The check is from "Green Dot Corporation" with a Pasadena, CA address. When I googled the name of the alleged sweepstakes, I discovered this was a scam wherein you are asked to deposit the check (which is fake) then wire the sending organization money and/or gift cards because the check was included an "overpayment". Wire transfers, along with gift cards are virtually untraceable once they are issued and/or sent. Please don’t fall for this sxam.

I was suspicious and cancelled the transaction with the credit card company. I then spoke to Mr. Kingston, who transferred the call to a man with somewhat of a Jamaican accent – David Sawyer (760)6007915 ( I am aware that there is an actual rep named David Sawyer at the official PCH, he is the gentleman who hands out the sweepstakes checks) the impostors also mentioned that they are affiliated with BBB.

Once I told the scammers I was going to report them , the rep "Mr. Sawyer" began to curse me out, and it was then VERY clear that he did have a Jamaican accent .

The check was to pay tax and fees on her prize. The caller said she would be informed when she called where to send the money to pay fees and tax. My 85 year old mother received a phone call saying that she won the Publishers Clearing House for $1,500,000. Then she was asked if she received the letter. She hadn’t gone down to get her mail for a few days, so she didn’t see it. She believed it was a scam, so she said give the money to charity.

However, when she got the mail, she found a letter with her name and address (see attached) That’s when she believed it was real.

She called the person back and was told the check might have been destroyed, but he would do what he could do to help her. Also, she should not show the letter to anyone. She was told that she needed a tax person before claiming the money. He could arrange a tax person and she would retain more of the money, than if she got her own tax person. He also wanted to know how much money she had. She said just enough for her rent and funeral.

I went to her house, looked at the letter and knew immediately that it was a scam. Envelope had no return address, stamp came from Canada. No Publishers Clearing House logo. When I called the number, there was an answering machine. I hung up and contacted Publishers Clearing House and they confirmed the scam.

I called the number back and said do not call (used my mother’s name) back because it was a fraud and it was being investigated. The person still called my mother. She told "Chris" that she knew it was a scam and hung up.

If I hadn’t intervened, my mother was going to move forward with this scam.
