Type of a scam Healthcare/Medicaid/Medicare

In early pregnancy you can have genetic testing done to find out about any pre-existing conditions and the sex of the baby. At the doctors office if you ask about testing you are offered testing done through the company Progenity. Staff in the doctors office hand you a pamphlet explaining that it is elective and often not covered by insurance. The pamphlet explains that there is a, "Peace of Mind for Patients," program that the testing can be done at a fraction of the cost. In the pamphlet it says, "Patient responsibility typically ranges from $25 to $200, depending on income." Well my Blue cross blue shield ppo was charged $7500. Our patient responsibility was $471. After contacting the company they claimed my income was to high to quality and they could do nothing. I emailed Progenity and Adam responded very quickly and put me in contact with Connie in the finance department. They again said that providers can charge whatever they want to and that we do not qualify. After asking about the company and why they have such bad reviews Connie said I could maybe have 50% off. When she got back to me her supervisor said I could have 20% off. To me I don’t think that vulnerable people that are newly pregnant should be told they will pay very little for this testing when the reality is they don’t know what to charge you. They just charge you a price, bill you three months later and ask to verify your income threatening that this conversation is being recorded.
