Overage of Data Scam Call

Type of a scam Phishing

At approximately 2:45, MDT, I received a call from the number noted above. The caller, who did not identify himself or his company, sounded like a young male who informed me that we had exceeded our data usage by 16GB, and that, "You need to pay closer attention to how much data you are using." He then stated the overage charges were $268.00 and asked if I wanted to put that charge on the card "you have on record." I knew it was a scam because of the following: 1) My carrier (Verizon) NEVER calls to tell me I’m out of data; rather, they e-mail AND text me with a warning that I am about to exceed my plan. 2) I do not have a credit card on record with Verizon – I pay directly from my checking account. 3) Within the past two weeks, I upgraded our account to "unlimited" data usage. I informed the young man of that fact and hung up on him. I then received a call from my grandson, who is included on our plan, saying that he had received the same call. He did not provide the caller with any information either. Unfortunately, there are some who will likely fall victim by providing a credit card number to "verify" the "card on record."
