Scammer called business on Saturday, March 9, 2019 and asked for manager on duty. Since it is an office, only a fill-in to run basic office functions is assigned to work Saturdays. Scammer identified themselves as from Oncor and they had a disconnection order for today for business and phone number needed to be called to resolve the billing issue. Office worker simply told scammer that manager is not available today. Scammer then asked if someone would be available to sign a disconnection notice. Office worker then hung up.

Office worker is acquainted with phone scams, so looked up phone numbers associated with caller ID on phone and the number provided to call to resolve the billing issue. The phone number used to call from was spoofed from Pacific Power’s (based in the Pacific Northwest– and as far as office worker can tell– has no discernible links to Oncor) Customer Service line to look as if they had some legitimacy. The phone number provided to call back had no notable results.

Said they were calling from Oncor, and were headed to the address to disconnect the electricity due to nonpayment (which is crazy, since we are on auto-pay). Said we couldn’t pay with a card, just with cash, and it would be $995.56 to stop services from being disconnected today while they investigate our account. Frank Williams was the name given as to whom I was speaking with. He said we would need to bring the cash to one of their retail locations within the hour to avoid disconnection today. He also said he had called the tech who was en route to disconnect our electricity, which bought us 45 minutes but that was it.
