Scammer was able to lock my computer via a pop up while using the internet instructing me to contact the microsoft support desk at phone #866-629-0123. The pop up stated hackers were trying to access my IP address to gain access to my personal and banking data. I called the number and after a lenghty discussion wth a rep (ID T19181) troubleshooting the problem I was informed I needed to immediately go to a Walmart or Best Best and purchase a gift card for $1000 to pay for an app to fix the problem.
I was informed to call them back with the gift card registration number to purchase the app which sounded suspect. I informed them I would get a second opinion on the problem and call them back later. Shortly after the phone call ended my computer was unlocked and started operating normally. Based on the the micro-soft reps accent I’m almost certain they were either from Pakistan or India.
