Type of a scam Debt Collections

I received a call from a 845 number claiming that someone was trying to send me "documents" and that they had been unable to deliver them. The caller claimed that there was "a case against" me. A few days later someone contacted my ex wife and told her the same thing: that there was "a case against" me. She forwarded the number (877 218 8390) and the "case number" they gave her (KA3994). When I called the first person to answer the phone seemed confused. She claimed that they (Mason and Nixon) do not call people. I gave her the "case" number and she transferred me to someone who claimed that the company was pursuing an outstanding balance for a landline (I haven’t had one since college) from a Verizon account in the amount of $*** from the year 2014 and that "today was the last day" for me to pay a settlement fee of $*** or the case was going "into arbitration." He claimed that he was doing me a favor.

I checked my credit report, there are no collections against me. I called Verizon, there is no outstanding account. It was clear that this was a scam.

These people knew my birthday, my SSN, two addresses at which I’d lived. They wanted information for "family members who might have opened the account."
