Type of a scam Tech Support

I got a blaring message on my computer which said "Don’t turn off your computer as we have detected illegal outside activity.", or something to that effect. There was a big message box saying to contact Microsoft and there was a phone number. I couldn’t close out of the window, or anything I was working on. I called the number and a man answered and asked what the problem was an he went through my computer and showed me a scan that was running and that my IP had been infiltrated. He said he needed to check to see what was wrong and would take some time. I gave him my phone number and he called me back when it was done. He of course said that my computer wasn’t protected and that the Norton protection I had didn’t protect e-mail, internet, etc. He said he could install the protection and gave me various plans, 1 year, 5 years, or 10 years and told me all my devices would be protected. He even offered a senior discount. He also instructed me that I would need a security word to make sure that when someone called me from the company, that I would know it wasn’t a scammer. Well I paid for the service and then I saw a few YouTube videos which laid out this exact scenario. One person was an IT guy, so he just played along with the caller. The other was a BBC investigator who called the scammers, who were in India, not from some company. They have a way to send these messages to ones computer stating "Fatal Error" and "Don’t turn off your computer", much like what happened to me. Too bad I saw these videos after the fact. They do have a Website, but I’m not too sure it’s legitimate because there are misspellings and the contact number has an area code of 516 which is for Long Island, New York, NOT Sacramento, California, where this company, Ken V Solutions is supposed to be located.
