Type of a scam Tech Support

Calls from a person with an Asian (usually Indian) accent telling us they are monitoring our internet connection and are alarmed by then number Errors. They say someone is hacking us and show us how to run a couple of "quick checks" to see them for ourselves. They precede to guide us through price checks on security software (using Staples and Office Depot sites}. They ask us to turn control of our computer(s) over for a few hours and they will clean up the system, install "life time programs" and basically get rid of the errors "FOREVER". They want us to send them a check for $300 for the service.

When asked "Who gave you permission to look at my computer(s)?", they answer ‘we are Microsoft certified technicians’ but they will offer no proof (certification number, etc.).
