I just received the email today and the “Herman” and “Hermann” alerted me that this might be a scam. What clinched it for me was the date of birth question and the background check. It is illegal for a company to ask your DOB and no one is going to do a background check unless you have accepted a job offer. It is a shame that there are people in this world who would take advantage of others who are already experiencing financial hardship.

I just answered the very same reply letter, from an iHireAdmin.com post, and am now very concerned, after finding this page and the posts on here about Goldfinch Superconductor Technologies, that I might have set myself up for fraud. I am feeling like I just dodged a bullet, since I have not reached the point of being accepted for the position and the HR letter receipt yet. They don’t have any banking information or my SS#, but they DO now have my full name, address and DOB.
I had noticed a typo in their logo found on the website, and recognized that the email from Herman was with one “n” and his name on the website and in his email message was with two “n”s. I thought that was very odd, and even asked about it.

I got the same email. Yes, it sounded fishey, and from reading this I will just delete.

Type of a scam Employment

I was looking for a remote position on ZipRecruiter. I saw a position listed as "Virtual Personal Assistant Needed ASAP" for the company ‘Goldfinch Superconductor Technologies, Inc.’ and applied right away. Later that night, I received an e-mail from someone by the name of Hermann Ziegler who claimed to be the Chief Operating Officer/Chief Financial Officer. He stated in the e-mail that I should answer the following interview questions in my response and that he would review and reach back out if interested. I answered the questions the next morning and later that afternoon was surprised when he responded and informed me he chose me for the position. I was ecstatic as my idea of working from home was about to become true while still juggling the life of a college student. Within his e-mails, he explained that he was located in Hong Kong since December due to the pandemic and would not be able to return until this was all over. With this, he explained in his e-mail of offering me the position that HR would reach out to me soon with an offer letter as well as other HR necessities, such as W-2 and direct deposit form, etc. I received an e-mail from HR the following day with just that. Although, it wasn’t until really looking at the e-mail that I noticed some strange things such as the fact that within the signature line, there wasn’t an actual person’s name to reach out to. Not only this, yet the contact of the e-mail origin appeared as "Human Resesources" rather than Human Resources. The next weird part was that per my offer letter, I was supposed to be on a three-week trial period and it was supposed to begin that very Monday, June 1st. Although, June 1st came and I heard nothing from neither Hermann nor HR. So I reached back out to Hermann and asked if perhaps I’d missed something. Instead of his response, I got a new e-mail from HR with the subject, "Update on This Week’s Task". The e-mail then stated that I was going to be receiving a check in the mail with my first week’s pay along with some extra money to pay out some vendors. They instructed me to deposit the check within my personal bank account and to only deposit through ATM or my mobile app. This is where my stomach turned and I got weirded out and realized I needed to research who these people were. This threw me off for the fact that they had never actually asked for my W-2 nor my direct deposit form, so how were they already going to pay me without the vital information listed on file. Also, up to this point, no one had actually picked up the phone and called me. Lastly, towards the end of that e-mail he kept saying "I look forward to meeting you soon". To which I thought to myself, how are you going to meet me, if you’re in Hong Kong? So I decided to go back onto their website and start actually clicking around. The first thing I did was look up the addresses listed on the website, both New York and Hong Kong. Secondly, I called the number within the HR e-mails I received and nothing, all numbers I called were dead-ends. Then I scrolled to the bottom of the website where I noticed icons of social media from Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. I know that most companies who do use social media will place their icons towards the bottom of their page. Although, what was weird to me was that I had already attempted to search them on LinkedIn and found nothing. So, I clicked on each icon one by one starting with Facebook which lead me to a blank page stating "page not found". Then, I clicked on Twitter and it took me to a profile for Wix, the website creation company. Lastly, I clicked on LinkedIn and it took me to my own LinkedIn to edit my profile. After this and further research on the e-mails and phone numbers, I knew it was too good to be true. I received the check in the mail and didn’t open it, but called my local police department to ask them how to properly dispose of the check. The crazier part was that the check had someone else’s name on it and was addressed from California. That same day of receiving the check, I got a text from "Hermann", but now it was a local number and that sealed it for me. It was all very weird, but I’m thankful I was intuitive enough to know something was off and further did my research on these people. I’m sure they thought that because I am a young, female college student I was going to fall into it all but I’m also thankful I didn’t give them too much information of myself and that it didn’t escalate any further. There’s a lot more details within the e-mails I received, but overall it was a crazy situation to go through for a job. Lastly, it wouldn’t let me put both e-mails but I want to make sure you have them: [email protected] and [email protected]

Omg I just fell for this now! I’m also a female college student and I guess they decided to pick me for this reason. Oh Gosh I’m so stupid smh. I’m really mad at myself because I actually gave over my direct deposit information. I’m driving over to my bank immediately and shutting down my account. Thank you for this detailed description!
