Type of a scam Employment

I had applied to multiple online jobs through SNHU (Southern New Hampshire University) career center. I got an email from a Geofrey Martin stating that I had gotten the job as his personal administrative assistant due to the fact that his previous one was involved in a car crash two weeks prior to the initial email. His email stated that he needed basic information (I.e. name, address, email, phone number) in order to mail me checks to use to process certain tasks (the first task being booking hotel rooms for a conference). I sent the information and then the emails began to get overly vague and tipped me off (I.e. saying "I hope you are doing well out there" although COVID-19 was happening and no one was going out). Once I received the "checks" in the mail, I noticed that they were from random people from different states AND two of them were USAA checks! He wanted to be notified when I received the checks and when I deposited them. I never deposited them because I know that he would use that to take my bank information since the checks came without the full sheet attached to it, it had already been separated.
