Type of a scam Employment

There was a posting online which I completed. I received a call for an interview. Once I "passed" the interview, I was advised that I need to complete an internship in order to be qualified for a position. The internship was to happen on my free time and it advised me of not quitting my now job. I agreed and signed a contract for the internship. Once the internship begun, I was advised they were classes where they would send me case studies that I needed to complete for the next day in order for it to be counted so I can be graded. This went on for a week. During the second week, I was approached for a part time position as a project manager within the same field to test the job out. I agreed, however, this is where I figured out it was a scam. The "employer" send me a letter with instructions on how to obtain the equipment (computer) that I need for the programs for the job. The instructions told me to purchase gift cards with the Apple store in the amount of $5k for the equipment. I declined and asked for the equipment to be sent to me with a contract that I would need to return the equipment on resignation from the job. They never answered back.
