Total money lost $500
Type of a scam Tech Support
While using Internet Explorer approx 2 months ago, received message that there was an error with Google, and to call a number for help. I called the # and gave a man remote access to my computer. He said he fixed my computer, but requested payment of $500 for a 1 year subscription for computer services from Expertadvice.com. I paid the $500 and my computer appeared to be fixed. Today I received a call from a man claiming to be from Expertadvice.com. The man stated that they were going out of business and were going to refund my $500. The man stated that because they were in a foreign country, they would need to deposit $6,000.00 into my account, then requested that I go to WalMart and obtain 5-$1,000.00 gift card. The man stated I would need to give him the numbers off of the gift cards. I gave the man remote access to my computer again. He had me log in to my bank account. Using his remote connection, he transferred $4,500.00 from my savings to my checking account. I did attempt to get the gift-cards at WalMart, but the customer service person suggested that this could be a scam. No money was deposited into my account from Expertadvice.com. The man called me repeatedly to obtain the gift card numbers, but I stopped answering his calls and changed my bank account password.
