Type of a scam Fake Check/Money Order
I was contacted on my university email address by a "Mike Burton" on 2/3/18, claiming to be an HR Recruitment Manager for Elkay Manufacturing Inc. He was offering a part-time job for students with a pay of $400/week. Once I provided my information for application purposes I was accepted and contacted through text by a "senior supervisor" named Anthony Fisher so he could assign me my first task. He informed me that a check for $2,450 was on its way to my address. He instructed me to deposit it ASAP and to notify him. The check later arrived to my address in a sketchy-looking USPS envelope with a cut and pasted "Barnes Noble" returning address in Austin,Texas. However, this individual’s phone number tracks him back to Pauma Valley, CA. I am pretty confident the check he sent was fraudulent. It was a Bank of America Cashier’s Check for $2,450. The check number on the upper right hand corner matches the routing number and there’s a totally different check number down on the bottom. The signature looks printed. It also says it was remitted (purchased by) a "XIN LIU". Thankfully, I did not deposit nor cash this check. I’ve reported this to the FTC and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
