While searching on Craigslist for a Maltese dog, I emailed the ad for two Maltese siblings owned by a woman who was moving in two days into an apartment that wouldn’t accept pets. After much correspondence that included beautiful photos , I asked to speak to the woman. I received a phone call from a man who was almost inaudible with a rooster crowing in the background. I became suspicious because the woman emailed me an address in a residential neighborhood in Dallas TX. He had a British accent and I inquired about it. He said he was Black and was a farmer. He didn’t fit the profile of this woman whom he claimed was his busy wife who couldn’t come to the phone because she was asleep. I emailed her the discrepancy and her grammar suddenly changed and her message was defensive. That’s when I did an internet search about petscams and discovered that these are prolific. I played along asking how to send the money and received this phoney website that appears legitimate until the instructions included sending gift cards.
