Caller said there is a cut off notice for my business today because I haven’t paid my power bill. I’m on the average payment plan with duke power company and am actually ahead according to my last bill (that I paid last week, before the due date).

This is a place of business and we received a call from an unknown number identifying themselves as Duke Power. The man on the line had a Hispanic accent and stated that there is going to be a power outage in our area and this was a courtesy call. When asked how long this outage would last, he stated he did not have that information and gave me a number to reach "customer service" and they can give me more information. I called the number and another Hispanic male asked for my account number. I told him I didn’t have it and gave him our address. he stated that the outage was due to non-payment of service. I transferred him to our accounting department and let them know I thought this was a scam. After she questioned the caller he hung up almost immediately.

I received a call from (800)7779898 telling me that they are Duke Power and my bill was behind. They gave me a number to call to get it paid up or power would be turned off in 30 minutes. The number they wanted me to call was 844-277-9450.
