Type of a scam Fake Invoice/Supplier Bill

A call center using a real Century Link phone number contacted me about a past due bill for $260.86 for an account that I never had. They even had my old mailing address and claimed the service was for that location. At first I thought it was a call about me recently set up service at my new address and they wanted to take my card information. I gave it to them, but the phone was disconnected before I could give the last bit of credit card info needed. I called the real Century Link customer service and talked with a rep and she assured me that there were no other accounts under my name or that old address and that I owed $0.00. She also assured me that Century Link will never ask you for your credit card information over the phone, instead they want you to use their app or to login to your online account to pay there. Since I spoke with her this person has called back, on Sept 9th 2019 and when I talked with them again they "tried to transfer me to their billing department" and the call was immediately disconnected. Again, same real Century Link type phone number but it has always been the same 1-844-212-0179 number. Be aware and always make sure you contact them, not the other way around.

An Indian sounding man called my business phone and said he was my phone company, and that I had overpaid my last invoice and had a credit on the account. I said, "Centurylink" He hesitated and then said, "yes". I said, "I’ve never known your company to call about any such thing. Are you sure you are Centurylink?" "Yes ma’am," he said. He verified the phone # he had called, my business company name and address, and then asked my name, which I gave him, saying he needed to know if I was the owner. I felt all along something was wrong, then he wanted an additional phone #, which I did not give, he wanted to know I was not a minor so wanted my birth date, which I did not give, and I told him I would not give him any more information and that I was going to hang up. He tried complementing me, saying I sound young so he needs my birthdate, and I said, "I am not young and I am not giving you my date of birth or any other information." Then he hung up on me. I don’t know if he would have tried to get money, or was just phishing for all of my personal information and that of my business.

Passing on a phone number to have checked out. I received a message at my home phone, claiming to be Century Link and saying that if I hadn’t recently changed anything to my account to call this number. I called and was asked for my account # (phone #) mailing address and last 4 of my SSN. I gave all three not thinking until they requested my password, and when I said I had never had to give a password, they hung up on me. I have contacted Century Link to make my account more secure and they told me that they only notify customers through mail and email, but I’m sure a scammer could access plenty with the info they do have. The number is 1-866-895-6405
