Type of a scam Phishing

We found this company online for the purchase of a family dog. We made contact, received a contract, pictures and videos of the dog. We communicated via email, text and phone with a representative regarding purchase of the dog. They stated they would send us an email address to send payment thru Zelle. Zelle would only allow us to send part of the amount so we called the representative again. He wanted us to send transaction confirmation. Things got strange after that and he began to tell us we needed to go to Walmart to complete the further payment. At that time we told him that this did not sound legitimate and not to accept the payment from Zelle, to cancel it and refund it to us. Then the phone call disconnected. I called the number back and it was out of service. I texted him and he told me he had now accepted the payment and he would have to mail us a check back. I told him to refund us the money immediately thru Zelle and he repeatedly refused. He then told me he would not refund me until he found a new buyer for the dog and would not continue the discussion. We are now out 500.00 and no family dog.
