Type of a scam Government Agency Imposter
The scammers called, claiming to be with the county sheriff’s office. When asked for a name and badge number the person gave the name of a sheriff deputy here. The person claimed that I had failed to show up for federal court jury duty and that if I did not come down to the sheriff’s office and pay a fee and sign some paperwork tonight, there would be a warrant issued for my arrest. I said that I did not receive a jury summons. They asked if I still lived at my address, and I said yes (mistake). They said that it did not matter whether I had received it or not. They said that I would need to get a "payment voucher" and when pressed, described Visa gift cards or other prepaid debit cards. They also said that I would need to keep them on the line while I went to the store and bought the payment voucher. I asked to speak with another officer and a second person came on the line claiming to be a captain associated with the sheriff department. I said that I was concerned that this was not legitimate when he asked why I needed to speak with him, citing the prepaid cards as payment. He told me that this was very serious and very legitimate, but that it was my choice, and if I didn’t comply within 15 minutes, I would be arrested and have to spend between 7 and 14 days in jail. I said that I was not going to go and buy a card tonight, and he said to ensure that I don’t have any sharp objects or drugs present when they come to arrest me and hung up.
