I was contacted by an automated message that stated I was facing a disconnection notice if I did not pay a past due energy bill balance of $989.77. I was given a number to contact. I contacted that number and was put in contact with a "Chris Bernard" who stated he was an account specialist with the Finance Department of Dominion Energy. He verified my full name and address and already had my telephone when I returned his call. I was very suspicious that my energy bill was that much past due because my online account reflected a $0 balance. He apologized several times and said that due to a "glitch in the system" the amount I was supposed to be charged fell behind and was not properly reflected in the balance due each month. He then described a very complicated scheme as to how to bring my bill in alignment that required me to go get two pre-paid Walmart Cards in the amounts of $494.88. This was necessary to show immediate proof of payment to a technician who was on his way to my house — 38 minutes — to disconnect my power. He grew more and more suspicious and once looking at my account and conferring with a friend it was obvious to met this was a scam. However, they called me back at the number I have listed 5 times in order to try and get me to go along with this scam. Because "Mr. Bernard’s" temperament was very patient (at some point I got angry) I can see how this would have been an effective scam for those who are less suspecting.
