Type of a scam Fake Check/Money Order
Offered a Virtual Assistant job via Indeed.com. The company and I had lots of back and forth correspondence regarding the position; after accepting they sent me a check that was supposed to be my first paycheck and a fee for equipment that I was to purchase with their representative. The representative and I spoke before the check was deposited.
I received a check, which I deposited; a hold was immediately placed on the deposit from my bank. The bank said that the check was likely fake and none of the funds became available. The issuing bank also established that the check was fake and they were unable to find it in their system. They informed me that the scam was likely operating on the assumption that the check would clear and I would wire them money, only to later bounce leaving me liable for the money sent.
Luckily, no funds were available and no money was lost, but there was a 7-day hold on my checking account.
