When using Google Chrome on my PC, a pop-up tab opened with a voice recording, telling me that the :WANNACRY virus had been detected on my computer. The tab page also said not to turn off or restart my computer and to call 1-844-484-5482 immediately.
I assumed this was a Microsoft number because the name "Microsoft""or "Microsoft Support" appeared on the page. I called and was told I had a virus and needed to screenshare to have it removed, and that it would take 45 minutes. They then told me to pay either $300 or $400 for either a 2 or 4 year "protection plan", respectively. They told me my bank would deny the charge and that I needed to authorize it.
Red flag number one. I authorized. Then they began the "cleanup process" and hung up. I then Googled them and realized they were a scam. I disconnected the screenshare and ignored their calls. Beware if you see this popup. DO NOT CALL. Their address is based in Moldova.
