Type of a scam Charity

Charity scam called on 11-22-2016 at 8:30 pm. Caller knew my name and my spouse’s. We donated to special olympics in the past, and caller asked for donation. Told caller we would but would like some more information mailed, but caller stated he needed my credit card over the phone immediately because to process the donation. That is when I knew it was a scam as they needed my information so quickly.

Our small charity has received a number of emails from an email claiming to need more information in order to give a donation. This is a scam from a very clever thief. The emails at the top are from the thief. The one at the bottom is from the real person who is trying to get this fixed. Beware.

From the thief:

"I admire what you guys are doing and wanted to give back in a big way this festive season.

I believe this is the time the most to reach out to the needy and especially the homeless. Growing up I found my mum, sister and I homeless for a few months and we had to sleep in shelters because my mum had an abuse issue which seemed to be constant with the type of men she chose to be with. One way or the other this had us sleeping at shelters because if she returned to where we called home it would have been abuse every other night while her children heard it all. We somehow found peace at the shelters till she got back on her feet after series of counselings.

I want to use this opportunity to give back in memory of my late mum Janet L Thomas who passed on earlier this year, a donation of $30,000.

Please advise on how this fund will be put to good use. To whom should the check be addressed ?

From the actual man trying to clear his name.

"Thanks for your email. I’m afraid the email you have received claiming to be from me is in fact from a fake *** *** who has assumed my identity and a similar email address (only difference a hyphen between *** *** ***). I can only assume this has been done for fraudulent purposes. We have received a number of emails/ calls over the last few days from people in the US working for charitable or not for profit organisations. They have also set up a mirror version of our website, also with the similar address which we have taken steps to get taken down.

Kind regards, *** ***
