When I signed up on dice.com to look for jobs, I found a data entry clerk position by someone who claimed to be from "Apple" and applied on Wed, Mar 18, 5:19 PM. I received an e-mail Mon, Mar 30, 7:49 AM about an online interview, but did not see it. I received a text shortly after at Mar 30, 7:53 AM from "Thomas Lewis" about how my resume was reviewed and asking if I am still interested. I then replied on Apr 5, 3:48 PM about how I am still interested. He asked to conduct the interview through Google Hangout and I agreed to it. "Thomas Lewis" suddenly became "Paul Johsnon" (Yes, he misspelled Johnson), but I did not notice. After some interview exchanges, he said the company will send a check, and I am to spend that on my office equipment. He also asked what banks I operate with, I said Chase for bank. I also said I use CitiBank and Discover for credit cards. He told me to report back at 8 AM tomorrow, on April 6th. I log in and reported back as told, and he gave me the congratulations. He said the startup check will be mailed out, and to check back in tomorrow at 8 AM again.
The next day, I reported back at 8 AM. He gave me the tracking number for the Fedex package. At 9:00 AM, I received the package, and also a message from him saying he saw the package arrived. He told me to deposit the check to my CitiBank card. I went to the CitiBank ATM and deposited the check on my CitiBank credit card. Afterwards, I was told to wire money to a bank account, the whole $4,500, to Melissa Sandoval. Paul Johsnon gave me the bank details of Melissa Sandoval. After I told him that isn’t possible, he said to try paying via PayPal to a vendor. I made a payment of $926.40 to Danielle Partin. He then told me to try making the same payment, but the payments kept failing.
At 1:00 PM, a FedEx employee came to my door, asking for the package back. FedEx claimed this was a fraud. I told him the unfortunate news that it is already deposited in my account, and that I am trying to get that money back as well. That’s where my suspicion finally urged me to investigate. After contacting Apple, they confirmed they do not post their jobs other than on their own careers website. I also noticed Paul Johsnon didn’t have an e-mail attached to his Google Hangout. I also asked for advice from friends/family, and they said a legitimate business would never ask their employees to spend money or do wire transfers. In the meanwhile, I did not inform Paul Johsnon about him being a fraud or that FedEx is claiming this is a fraud.
I have contacted CitiBank to freeze my credit card and reported this to PayPal as well. I reported this to Gmail and dice, and will report this to the Better Business Bureau too.
