I found a jet ski I wanted to purchase which was through Ebay. The offer seemed too good to be true. A jet ski that according to what we looked up could have a value of $5000.00. It was listed at $800.00 and in really good shape with low mileage. Per the seller, she was getting a divorce and wanted to get rid of it. Said the process would be smooth and all I had to do was buy $800.00 of gift cards with cash from any store that sells Ebay gift cards and to show her the picture of the numbers for the card or send the receipt with the numbers. She also said the trailer was included and that it would ship without any additional cost to me once I sent confirmation with everything to Ebay. The Ebay email I received looked legit and said that I could call the direct phone number to report the numbers on the gift cards or just send in a photo. I could also ask questions at that phone number if I had any. I was going to call to question it since I’ve never bought or sold on Ebay and do not know the procedure. I was a bit skeptical so I tried to look up the order number on Ebay but nothing came up. I then called the Ebay customer service to question it and when the numbers never had a product, I told them about what the seller was asking. I was told it’s a scam and that Ebay would never ask me to buy gift cards and send numbers, that I would always pay with credit card or paypal. I’m glad I went with my gut and did not lose out on $800.00.

I suspect that this is some sort of scam to capture my information if I were to click on their link. I also suspect the reason they are pretending to to be ebay is because people will be desperate to keep their ebay acct. active because of CORVID-19.

I was looking on Craiglist.com at golf carts. Wanted to get one for my wife so she could used it when attending college football games. Found one that a lady was selling. She stated her husband had passed away and she was downsizing after moving back to ***, NE where her sister lived. The address was listed as ***, Ne. The cart was a 2012 Club Car Precedant. The add included several photo’s of the cart. She stated she was using the eBay Buyer Protection to handle a secure online transaction. They asked that I purchase eBay Gift Cards and call 1-480-478-0282. I did and talked to a person named ***. All the paperwork I received was from ebay. After purchasing the gift cards and calling them in I received another email requesting fund to cover insurance on the vehicle. Because I wanted to get the cart for my wife as a gift I purchase the requested amount and called ***. He stated I would hear from the shipper by 8PM to arrange delivery. Never received the call or the cart. Went online and entered the phone number and found out it was a scam.

I saw this car posted on craigslist and the person referred me to eBay and this is what she said

eBay Buyer Protection

Hi, my name is Brenda,

My 2004 Acura TL, never had or need any paint/body work done, garaged keep always, without any mechanical problems, tires and wheels are in great shape as well, electric is working perfectly. The car has only 87 k miles, it is in excellent condition, no liens or loans,it has been very well maintained, with a clean title and no accident history. The engine is 3.5L ,the automatic transmission shifts perfectly. I am selling it at this final price of $1,000 because my husband died 1 month ago (he had a heart attack) and it brings me bad memories and that’s the reason I want to sell it asap. I, along with my daughter decided to sell the house and so we moved to my sister in Omaha, NE trying to start a new life.I want to use eBay services for the safety of both of us so if you’re interested in purchasing this car just email me with your full name, address including the zip code and phone number, so I can notify eBay that you are selected as my possible buyer and they will contact you to explain the entire procedure. I am waiting for your reply.

P.s. Also, you have the pics attached.????????

Hello again Demarcia,

I have received your details and I am going to send them over to eBay so we can get this transaction started. Our request will be processed in few hours or tomorrow morning. They will send the invoice, with all the instructions on how to complete the sale. I will shoot you an email as soon as I have any news from eBay, let me know if you get any emails from them before i do.. As I told you in my first e-mail,we just moved to my sister in Omaha,NE. Before leaving I had prearranged the deal with eBay services so my presence isn’t necessary. The vehicle is now located in Omaha, NE, at eBay storage facility, ready to be delivered. It will arrive at your address in 3-4 working days. The shipping costs are included in the total price of the vehicle! You will have 5 days to test and inspect the vehicle prior to make any purchase.

Thank you

Hi Demarcia,

eBay told me they already sent you the invoice, make sure you also check your spam folder. Everything is ready on my part, I have signed and notarized all the paperwork.I used the same method when I bought a camera from eBay, it was very quick and simple. Also, there is no reason to worry because after those 5 days of inspection, if by any reason you find something you don`t like about the vehicle, you can send it back, on my cost and eBay will refund you in full, in max 48 hours. If you have any questions you can call the eBay at :+1 (949) 264-9106.

Do let me know if you’re going to make the payment!

eBay Buyer Protection

We have to inform you that there is an issue regarding your shipment.

The shipping process of your item was stopped during shipping process because your product is not insured.

There are two insurances for the item, first insurance for that 5 days inspection period when the item is at your place for the inspection and another insurance for the transportation. The seller paid for both of them but since the item was valued by our Department more than the price you agreed with the seller, you need to make a deposit fully refundable of $1,000.00 because the item was undervalued. Since the insurance that the seller paid does not cover the new insurance that we need in order to continue with the delivery, the shipping process is on hold.

The trailer that was transporting your item is also transporting 2 other products. The other buyers already paid the insurance of their items so we are waiting for you to make a deposit for the insurance. The cost of the insurance is $1,000.00. You will receive this payment ($1,000.00) along with the vehicle ( cash in hand ), in full because the deposit for the insurance is fully refundable. We hope that you understand that is very important to insure the vehicle during the transportation. You have to make the payment using the same payment method. We are waiting for your payment confirmation as soon as possible so the shipping process can continue. Once again, you will receive your money back when you will receive the item. We truly apologize for any inconvenience!

Thank you for using our services!

Sincerely,

eBay Financial Department

So I emailed her and she returned a message back and told me that she was selling straight through eBay. I got emails from the supposed company on what to do and an invoice with the product and price. Last email they sent had the confirmation number for delivery, but also said that the licenses to pull the vehicle had expired the the day before they were going to ship the vehicle and that I needed to send $1000.00 more dollars and that I will get it back once the vehicle was delivered. I told them I wasn’t sending any more money and to refund me my $2000.00. They told I would have to wait 60 to 90 days and I would get a cashiers check in the mail

Responded to an add for sale of used car 2006 Nissan Maxima. Sent text message to individual at Cincinnati 513 phone number and received text message from 757 Hampton VA phone number. Scammer said name was Linda Dempsey and husband died recently she was a military member going on deployment and needed to sell car quickly which is why it was priced so low. Said I was interested and scammer said she would have eBay send an email to complete transaction as her car was being held by private storage and eBay would arrange the sell and shipment. All correspondence was through email. never talked to person. since person used military and death of husband and was a woman never questioned it. I don’t shop on eBay so never knew the service didn’t exist. Thought it was a special arrangement for military members through eBay. Scammer said eBay would send an email to me arranging the sale of vehicle. Email said that eBay gift cards needed to be used for purchase. A vehicle is being sold on the Letgo app its a white Acura TL 2007 they are asking 1500 dollars for it. But the seller is using the [email protected] email only. The scammer then sends en ebay logo transaction and you must buy three ebay gift cards of 500 dollars to make the purchase. The ebay add says they will hold the money until the buyer receives the car. The buyer can try out vehicle for 5 days if satisfied with vehicle then the buyer lets ebay know to give money and transacction is coThe scamers use the let go app to advertise and then through an email [email protected] tell the buyer to purchase three ebay gift cards of 500 dollars a piece to complete the vehicle purchase. After you send the three scratches redemption codes you don’t receive no information. Which its already to late. Scamers have the money and you don’t receive no car.

The scammers used the likeness of ebay , issued a confirmation number and invoice for the product I was purchasing to scam me out of $2200 for the purchase of a vehicle that would be delivered within 5 days. The scammer had a "customer service number" that I could call to find out the status of my purchase . The number still works and a person still answers the number and acknowledges you by the your confirmation number. When I ask for the status of my purchase they hang up. They sent me an email and invoice all using eBay’s likeness and image so it was very hard to detect until the car didn’t show up. I used gift cards as a form of payment and ebay is looking into the scam because they should have the ability to find the gift card numbers and how they were used.
