Type of a scam Family/Friend Emergency

My elderly mother received a call from someone claiming to be the Public Defender in New York. He said that her grandson, my son, had been involved in an accident and had been arrested for reckless endangerment and vehicular manslaughter. He said my son would be released after he posted a $10,300 bond. My mother said she spoke with my son, who had six-stitches in his lip, so his voice sounded different (also she hasn’t spoken with him for a while).

He left a case ID number and a return phone call. I called and he gave me the same information that he gave my mother. After a few minutes of questioning, I realized, of course, that it was, a scam, albeit a very well thought out scam.

Please be aware of a call from a Public Defender – the number he used was 864-660-3302, which I traced to South Carolina and not NY. Also, on her caller ID, the person’s name came up as David Smith and not Thomas Wilson.

Thanks
