Type of a scam Business Email Compromise
I am a teacher in a public school in B.C., Canada. The scammer contacts you fraudulently using the official email address and name of your current boss/administrator/principal requesting your personal phone number for you to do something for them (not an unreasonable request if you are a teacher – I assumed it had something to do with a student). Unfortunately, I only clued in after sending the scammer (not my boss) my personal cell number. I then received a text from the following number:
1 (908) 913-0412
at 5a.m. addressing me by first name and requesting that I respond to the text if I received it and signed by the actual name of my current boss/administrator.
I did not engage in further communication. I simply contacted my school’s I.T. department, as well as my mobile provider to activate “port-out protection.”
