Over the last couple of years, I have been getting spoof phone calls, where the area code and exchange of the number calling is the same as mine ((210)823-####). The last four digits are always different. One time it was almost exactly like my wife’s cell phone number, so I answered, and it of course was an unsolicited sales call.
I answer them now, and select the "do not call" option if available. It isn’t always, so I end up connecting to a human. I then ask them to remove me from their calling list. At this point, they usually disconnect immediately, which says to me that they are involved in an illicit "business".
I put my number in the national do-not-call registry, but these people obviously pay no heed to it.
