Type of a scam Fake Invoice/Supplier Bill
Late Dec 2017, a legit looking bill from AT&T arrived saying we were being charged for long distance roaming charges for about $4.41 billed from our landline. This is strange, since we don’t have AT&T, we have Verizon for our landline and cell. I called the listed number of (888) 795-2717 and spoke to "Angela’ who said she was in Danville, VA . We are actually in a rural area near Lynchburg, VA . She told me the reason for the new bill was that Verizon had sold some of their towers to AT&T for extra pings and we used some long distance roaming. I told her that we didn’t use our landline for long distance calls. She said we must have not realized some of our calls were out of range. She said to pay anyway, that we should have been told by Verizon. We HAD heard some type of info on the news about Verizon and something about towers, so I guess it seemed and looked legit. I went ahead and paid the small amount. It seemed strange however to get another bill for the same amount on the heels of the first. I then called the ‘real’ AT&T and gave them the account number, (started with an H) they told me they never heard of it.They told me to also call Verizon. Verizon told me that they had no such tower agreement with AT&T in our area. I called the postal Inspector, and she told me that the website looked fishy and to file a formal complaint I did. Since the printed bill came USPS, it would come under the mail fraud category. I called our Bedford County Sheriffs department to report this. A new one to them. I found the AT&T Community forum for mail scams and found another person in PA reporting an even higher bill of $200.00 and threat of reporting it to Credit bureaus, etc…After reporting it to our SunTrust Bank, they were alerted to this as well. Yesterday, March 15, 2018, got another bill !!!! Has no one shut these people down yet ? Called the 888 number again (Ironically their message says they are closed on weekends….) Guess who answered ? ‘Angela’ !! This time she says shes at a call center in Tulsa , OK. She yelled and stated that they were legit, Told her she was mistaken and to take us off their ‘mailing list ‘. Hope our local and national news will finally report this scam. Oh, BTW, ‘Angela’ said on the first call that AT&T was collecting these roaming charges in 18 states where Verizon had sold cell tower rights to them. Hope everyone sees this. Thank You .
