Type of a scam Identity Theft

My corporate office’s switchboard had notified me of a call coming from a Sam Jordan of New York and asking if I wanted to take the call. I work in customer service and deal with people nationwide so I had accepted it. The person I’d talked to asked if I was who I was. I replied yes. Then the person hung up. I was confused why this person would call me from New York but then remembered the telephone scam when people answered yes. Panicking a little now, I called the switchboard operator back to try to get the New York number. The operator first mentioned on his screen the number was unlisted. He tried to scan through several numbers on his call log, but none referenced any NY number. I told him the situation and he advised me of one of those ID theft/credit report monitoring sites. I quickly researched and signed up for one now. Also, I’m being proactive in checking online all my banking and credit card accounts and changing my passwords.
