While working on my personal computer, a pop-op came up on my computer stating they were from Microsoft and needed to call the number on the screen so all of my electronic devices wouldn’t be shut down. I called the number, a man with an Indian accent answered and told be our computer, internet and phone systems had been hacked by a virus so bad that all of our household electronics had to be shut down and wouldn’t operate again until I paid them to fix the problem. I allowed them access my computer to "fix" the problem, and paid them with an electronic check. I watched as they "fixed" the "problem." Afterward, (something I should have done first before letting them in) I looked them up online and found that others had been scammed by them as well. I placed a hold on the check, but, when they found out that check wasn’t going to go through, they rolled the check number forward to the next numerical check and it went through my bank, at which time I contacted my bank. The bank eventually returned the money to my account, and I filed a report with the Department of Justice.
