My boyfriend and I went to the Edwards Alhambra Renaissance movie theater, 1 East Main Street, Alhambra, CA, (844) 462-7342, to watch a movie on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at 7:50 PM. When we walked into the movie theater, someone who represented himself as a movie theater employee approached us and gave us two raffle tickets. He said that the theater was conducting a raffle during our movie, and that after the movie, we should walk to the right side of the theater to check if we’d won anything. We were excited, and thought we could win free movie tickets or a popcorn, and we thought it was generous of the movie theater to offer a promotion to its customers. After the movie, we walked over to where the man had indicated. There were kiosks there and we were prompted at first to enter our raffle ticket number, then our phone number, and progressively more personal information, including email addresses, zip codes, income levels, housing type, family size, and gender. Because we thought that the raffle was affiliated with our local theater, we entered the information. Once all the information was entered, the screen populated and said "Congratulations, you’ve been entered to win!" It was only then that we realized that we’d given our private information away to some unknown organization not affiliated with our theater at all. Neither the kiosks nor the raffle tickets identified who this organization was or who they were affiliated with. When I asked the manager at the movie theater about the kiosks and why they were there and what we might win, the manager (after first suggesting that he was not even the manager) told me that he had nothing to do with the kiosks and didn’t know why they were there. He acted as if he didn’t know the kiosks were there. I saw many people walking over to the kiosks to enter their information, particularly senior citizens, and something about this does not seem right to me. I wish for it to be investigated.
