caller contacted me through ebay pretending to buy an item. they pretended they didn’t know how to pay, then said they would pay and asked me to add a $300 steam gift card.

Son put up shoes on Ebay. Woman responded saying she’d buy the shoes for $300 off the Ebay site to avoid fees. She sent $1130 check (from an JGJD LLC dba Cork & Bottle Wine and Spirits account that we subsequently learned had been stolen) via FedEx (return address was Bimbo Bakeries, 480 S Vail St, Montebello, CA 90640) with the following typed instructions:
Dear Recipient, Heres a paycheck issued out to your full name. Firstly, what you’re to do is to make sure you text your full name, check no and total amount received on the check to this number now…707-395-7645. This is for payment verification and to receive further instructions on what you’re to do which you must stick to. Thank you! Acknowledge the receipt of this payment.
Check was deposited by son, and once confirmed "funds cleared and available for use," son emailed the requested $800 to the scammer. A few days later, the bank confirmed the check was a fake.
Cork & Bottle owners were notified, wherein they stated that 15 others had been "taken" using their stolen account/checks, local police had been notified and the FBI was getting involved.
