Type of a scam Family/Friend Emergency

We received a frantic, crying phone call from who we thought was my niece, claiming she was in the hospital with a broken nose. She was in N.Y. visiting her girlfriend & had been in a car accident. Unfortunately, she had also been drinking, so now she was awaiting her court date for a dui conviction that would send her to Riker’s prison. This girl was very convincing, & my mom really thought it was her granddaughter. They even had a lawyer make a follow up call with the case number and everything. Of course, it would cost a couple of thousand dollars to make sure she was released until her court date came up. It seemed legit until they started saying please keep this to yourselves. She is very embarrassed and doesn’t want anyone to know. That and she choose to call her grandmother instead of her own mother. I decided to google the number & sure enough it was a scam number. Of course, we got everyone else worried with the thought of our loved one being hurt and in a very bad situation. It wasn’t until we located her & realized she was at a doctor’s appt. that we really knew what those cold hearted jerks were up to. We didn’t fall victim to it, but how many people do ? Hopefully, this report will stop this from happening.
