Total money lost $159.80
Type of a scam Credit Repair/Debt Relief
I received a call stating that my student loan had been flagged as eligible for a stimulus relief and forgiveness program. When I called, I talked to an "agent" who asked for my login information (username AND password) to my loan service account. She then told me that she would have to put me on hold to figure out if I was eligible for benefits. She returned after several minutes and told me that I had qualified and gave me a bunch of numbers. Told me I would pay $159.80 for five months and then my payments would drop down to $3.25 for 120 months. She said that I couldn’t pay extra on my loan or pay the amount in full because it is part of the program’s terms for me to pay that amount for the 120 month term. I thought that was super strange, but thought maybe it was a way to keep me in my current employment so I could continue to qualify for the benefit program. Then she said she had to charge the $159.80 today and I could set up payment for the rest of the months thereafter. She also texted me documents that she insisted I electronically sign while on the phone with her. She was sure to stay on the phone until I said I had signed them all. She congratulated me on my eligibility and quickly got off the phone after getting payment.
After I got off the phone, I looked over the documents I "signed" and quickly realized that there were several grammatical errors that a reputable company would never have. I also noticed that the social security number that they had for me was not my correct number (THANK GOD!). I looked up the website and noticed that the website was new, copyrighted in 2020, which raised flags as well. I tried to call to cancel because the document did state I had three days to cancel. I immediately wanted to cancel. When I called, no one answered. When I called the original number that the agent gave me, it said "you’ve been removed from notifications, goodbye" and hung up. I called several times to the number and pressed both 1 for customer service and 2 for billing, and both fall silent.
I called and filed a fraud claim with my bank and Department of Education, and after cancelling my card I finally received a call back. When I didn’t answer, a man left a message saying he was affiliated with Docuservice and the agent I talked to and I could ask him for him if I have any questions. I called the number back, pressed 1 for customer service and a woman answered "hello?" (Unprofessional much?) And I asked for the agent I worked with. She told me to hold for a second and then told me she was busy on the phone and asked if she could help me with anything. I stated that I wanted to cancel and the document told me I could cancel within three days, so I wanted to talk to my agent and do that. She told me that I could try calling back in a few minutes to talk to my agent or she would have the agent call me back and we could discuss that matter. (Weird!) I told her to have her give me a call back. She hung up, and its been four hours and still no call. I don’t anticipate hearing from them again since I am 1.) wanting to cancel and 2.) am educated enough to read the document and see that a three day cancellation is within my right per their super unprofessional document they had me "sign."
I have reported them to my bank, the Department of Education, and state police. If they’re legit, then a lot of these red flags wouldn’t be thrown up all over the place. If they call, DO NOT GIVE THEM CARD INFORMATION, LOGIN INFORMATION, OR PERSONAL INFORMATION.
