Kroger Imposter

Type of a scam Fake Check/Money Order

I received an email from Kroger to apply for a position as a secret shopper, this was a legit email from Kroger. But then later I got a message that I had been selected and they were sending me a check. I would be paid $300 and receive money to shop with – sounded great. When I got the check it was for $1,900. The instructions were to FIRST, cash the check, (BTW, they said I need to do this within 48 hours of receiving the check) then go to Kroger, Walmart and Target and purchase $500 in a certain gift card at each store, complete a survey and mail the gift cards back to them. I almost fell for it! But then I realized that 1 – none of the communications since the very first email came directly from Kroger – the check wasn’t even from Kroger. 2 – what they were asking me to do did not match what the Kroger email said would happen. So, the way I figure it, the scam is that the 48 hours is to make you act before you can think about it – but the check will eventually bounce, you’ve sent the $1,500 back to them and you owe the bank $1,900.
