Scammer says they are ATT/DirecTV, offering to lower DirecTV bill by 50% plus some freebies. This is the scam that won’t quit. I’ve been getting these calls for over a year. At least a couple of times per weeks. At one point they had my DirceTV account number and my home address. They try to get you to "prepay for service" using Amazon or eBay gift card. FRAUD

How do we shut this down?

I saved the voicemail message. Now they’re using an British sounding person.

Was contacted by someone claiming to be DirecTV and ATT stating that my box was incompatible and that I had to upgrade my devices with a Software Wireless Link and that if I didn’t my tv would no longer work. They stated this costs $1800 but were only charging me $199. They had my old CC information, but I accidentally gave them my new card info. I was called from 850-800-8352. First call I hung up. They then called back. After speaking with them I was told to contact 347-593-8761 ext 004 or ext 2134. I then realized and called and cancelled my CC.

I got a text message from Direct TV offering me half off my cable bill. I called back. They seemed to be on Central time because they were an hour different from me, I’m on EST. I called them last night about 6pm. I spoke to John, he asked for my phone number. He had an Indian accent. He wanted me to make a payment before 8pm last night. If I wanted to pay the $300 upfront. He wanted me to buy two $300 eBay cards. He told me to go to Walmart, Rite Aid, or Walgreens. He said I would receive a new Iphone if I paid $1800 upfront. He said the retail value of the phone was $900 and it would be Fedexed to me overnight. He sounded very professional.

Received cal lfrom someone claiming to be with Direct TV, offered 50% discount if you pay for 6 months upfront, requested $750 in Ebay cards. Got security code and actually made changes with Direct TV account. I have spoken with Direct TV and they do not text and do not have that offer. They were able to change my account back and set a new security code. Still receiving calls wanting me to pay.

It was early in the morning when I got a call from a Alex Shaw from DirecTV, stating he need to update the software on my box. He does have a badge number, which is AJ911Z, he does need a credit card number from me, because their is a charge of $20.00. At the end of the year, I would get back $230.00 back on my credit card. It was early in the morning, I didn’t know what he was talking about but, I gave him my credit card number. Later when I woke up, I called my sister and she said that DirecTV doesn’t call you like that and charge your card for changes they made to your system. So, I had a number for DirecTV, I called them and they confirm that they wouldn’t call me early in the morning and they wouldn’t ask me for my credit card number over the phone.

Caller alleging he was from DirecTV said they would drop my bill by $30/month and upgrade my channels if I paid 4 months up front. Red flags went up, but I played along. To get the deal, I had to buy an Amazon gift card (equal to 4 months service), call them back and give them the information on back of gift card. Only thing I know other than the above information is that both individuals I spoke with sounded as if they had a South Asia (Indian) accent.

I would not be locked into a contract and could cancel at any time without charge. If I paid within 24 hrs, I would also receive a $70 prepaid VISA card. After purchasing the EBay gift card, they told me to contact Directv at 1-855-917-8675 and give them authorization code of V9635921 along with the info of the gift card. I contacted Directv to check it out and its a scam through and through. Don’t fall for it!

He said thanks and hung up. I realized I had not received such a call before and remembered the "yes" scam. I called the number on callerid, 888-829-6268, and it was reported as being out of service. I was contacted by landline phone on August 4 at 11:44am by 800-531-5000. I was told this was "John Anderson with Directv. We have a promotional offer for the merge of ATT and directv. I was asked to give my account information. I told them they had it in front of them since they contacted me. I was asked about my mailing address which they had. I was also asked if my date of birth was correct which they had. The offer was that my bill would be reduced by half if I paid 5 months up front with an amazon gift card in the amount of $300.00. This would be a new lifetime rate and for 2 years I would receive promotional channels such as HBO etc. I was given a confirmation number and transfered to a supervisor (Phil) to receive the promotion code number. I was then told to call 8887449406 ext. 1 to give the amazon gift card number to the billing department and I would receive a $100.00 visa gift card in the mail.

I was contacted by someone representing themselves as being from DirecTV. The caller ID even said DirecTV on my phone, so these people have a way of spoofing DirecTV’s actual Customer Service number. At first a woman with a thick accent explained that AT&T & DirecTV were offering a special promotion whereby they would reduce my monthly bill to $69.95 per month. She also said that Amazon was involved and was sponsoring this promotion. If I was interested, she would transfer me to a “Supervisor” who would answer any questions and explain how it would work. I expressed interest and was transferred. The man I spoke to was a little easier to understand and said that for this to work, I would pay the first 5 months of $350, during which DirecTV would not bill me and then for the next 19 months I would be billed @ 69.95 per month. He specifically mentioned that it was for two years but would not be a contract commitment . Then he said that since this was sponsored by Amazon that I should pay the first 5 months using an Amazon gift card which I was to purchase at a local store and not directly from Amazon. And if I hurried and called them back by 10:00 pm tonight with the Gift card information, they would send me a $100 VISA gift card or an Amazon Fire Tablet. He gave me the following number to call (888-660-7949) and a Promotion Code number. I figured that this was a scam by going to the Amazon website and reading about the exact scam on the page devoted to Scams using Amazon gift cards. That page is here: Amazon.com/giftcardalerts. If you call the 888 number above it sounds just like when you call DirecTV. Lesson here is NEVER PAY UP FRONT FOR ANYTHING LIKE THIS, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT INVOLVES PAYING WITH A GIFT CARD.

The following description from your site describes this scenario exactly as it happened but I will provide more detailed information: "DIRECTV impersonators have been contacting customers offering a reduced monthly rate on bills in addition to receiving premium channels if they paid 5 months up front using Amazon gift cards within 24 hours of the call. If the consumer agrees, a “supervisor” will be put on the line to record and verify the agreement and provide an authorization number to use when calling back in to give the claim code located on the back of the Amazon card." The only exception to that statement is the "supervisor" did not give me 24 hours. I received two calls today. I ignored the first one but answered the second one at 3:09 PM. The first person I talked to – I don’t remember the name he gave me – described the "Amazon Promotion" which is that my Directv service monthly cost would be reduced to only $59.95/mo for a period of 2 years with no commitment from me and I would also get all the premium channels for the 2 years. At this point I figured if it sounds too good to be true…, so I was suspicious and asked if they could email me the information. They of course said they could not do that. I decided to go along but I would not provide any credit card or personal information. So then he connected me to the "supervisor" – said his name was Oscar – who first asked for my phone number and then read my address to me to supposedly confirm my customer identity. Then he told me I needed to purchase an Amazon Prepaid Gift card for $300 to cover the first 5 months of Directv service and call their billing dept at 888-910-3813 ext 1 by 9 PM to give them the number from the gift card for $300 and this "Amazon Discount Promo Code", DTV2607. They said the $300 card would cover the first 5 months and then after that I would be billed only $59.95/mo for the remainder of the 2 years. I said OK and we disconnected. At this point I was fairly certain this was a scam. So I did a little research on the web and see that it is. Thank you BBB for the information you provided. Also I would like to mention the caller ID came in as “800-531-5000 Directv”. I checked and this number is a legitimate Directv contact number. But I realize caller IDs can be faked.

Received a telephone call on Tuesday, 9 Apr, from a man named Michael Alex claiming to work for DirecTV. He said there were satellite problems the night before that required them to update their programming, and not all receiver boxes would be able to receive the signal. He asked me to give him the ID number on my receiver box, which I did. He claimed my receiver was affected and asked me to turn the TV off for 10 minutes so an on-line update could be made. He then told me there was no charge for the updated programming, but there was a fee of $199 which would be a security deposit against the equipment I already have and which would be refundable in 6 months. I asked him to repeat himself, and then I told him I had a 2-yr contract with DirecTV and I had no intention of paying additional funds. I asked to speak to a supervisor. That person identified himself as Mike Melvin, and he repeated the same information. I told him I refused to pay a security deposit for equipment I already have. He told me my TV would quit receiving a signal in 2 days. I then asked if I could use this as grounds to terminate the existing contract, and he said not without paying an early termination fee. I told him I would call the BBB the next day before I decided what to do, as I was fairly certain they could not add a fee to an existing contract. After Mike Melvin continued to repeat the same information, I terminated the call. It did not get to the point that I was asked for any payment information because I told them upfront I was refusing to pay any additional fees.

They wanted me to go but a $300 Amazon gift card and then call 888-410-8939 and then pay the "billing department." The number you call sounds very DirecTv like. I spoke to a few people out of curiosity buying time "while I was at a local store buying the gift card."

I asked them where they were from and they said DELVNER, COLORODO. I said I bet they are big Denver Patriots football fans and said they were not sports fans and they had just moved from New York. I asked them if they liked "Scam Mountain…I hear it keeps growing." Ha!

I even offered to pay extra but I guess they are not very smart and just know how to take their orders?

My concern is the fact they had my account information, name & number. SOMEONE has to be at fault for this information getting out there.

Hi I am reporting a scam that I was involved in, My name is Mrs. Toby Thomas, about the first week of May I received a call from who I thought was DirecTv, about a promotion that they were offering, the person that called had my account number and my husbands name which is on our bill, the person stated that we had been with DirecTv for a good amount of time and that they were offering us this promotion because of that. The promotion was we send in $200.00 and for 2 years our bill would be $49.99 a month, the $200.00 would take care of the bill for May, June, July and August, after that we would be billed $49.99 for the remainder of the 2 years. Then they asked me to get a Green Dot MoneyPak card for $200.00 and call them and give them the number off of the card, which I did on May 18th. the promotion included us getting all of the channels for $49.99 a month, when I called in the number to the card they said that I would start getting all of the channels, which I never did. A week later they emailed me and said that the card did not work and that I would need to go get another card and call them and give them the number off the card and then they would in turn send me $300.00 for all of my troubles. At this point I tried checking the card and could not do so. The next day I received a bill from Directv in the mail that stated that I owed over $200.00 on my bill which I did not pay in May because the scammers told me not to play that bill, that the $200.00 would take care of my May bill, now at this I get a statement from Directv letting me know that my bill had doubled. I called Directv and was told that I had been scammed, and that they had no such promotion going on at this time, I was then told to go and report this to the store where I purchased the card which I did and to also report this to my local police department which I did and they gave me a case number. They have emailed me several times and called. I called today to see if they were still operating and they are they have a recording on the phone just like Directv and they also have the Directv logo on the emails. The number is (855)979-6455. I received a call from a number that I recognize to be DirecTV. They told me that I was eligible for a promotion that would reduce my monthly payment to 69.99 and send me a $100 visa gift card. They said to qualify for the promotion i’d have to agree to pay 5 months in advance. I asked why they were offering the deal, since i’m naturally suspicious, and they told me that Amazon had partnered with DirecTV to promote their gift cards. They asked if I’d like to go through with the deal, which I agreed to, and provided me with a confirmation number. I was told that I would need to purchase an Amazon Gift card as part of promotion and use it to pay my bill. They also gave me the number to billing, and told me to provide them with that confirmation code so that I could get the discount. I purchased the gift card and called back so that I could get my discount. The automated recording is an exact match for the one at DirecTV. I know, because i’ve called DirecTV way too much since i’ve had my service. Once i pushed the correct button to speak to the representative I gave the info for the gift card, and immediately after that, the representative told me that it would take 48hrs for the change to be reflected in my account. At that point I started to believe I had just been scammed. I know from my past experience that when adjustments are made to my account, I generally can see them immediately on directv.com or at least within the hour, and an email confirmation of the changes. As soon as they told me 48 hours I googled directv amazon scam, and lots of info about the scam popped up immediately. The same thing had happened to many others apparently.

I am naturally suspicious of things like this, but it was a very well organized scam. They called from DirecTV’s number 800-531-5000. The person I spoke with had my account number, my name, phone number, address, and even knew the service that I had, how could they possibly get all this info on me if they aren’t DirecTV. (maybe possible data breach) I felt more at ease when they didn’t ask for credit card info or pay immediately, and the fact that I would be calling them back with that info, so since i thought I was calling DirecTV, I didn’t think that it could be a scam. Plus the number they provided 888-280-4331 has the exact same automated recording as the main number for DirecTV. It wasn’t suspicious at all that the number that I was asked to call as the billing number was different than their main line, because they have multiple numbers, and when I had an issue with technical support they gave me a direct number before.

Type of a scam Phishing

Been receiving calls from 800-531-5000 (which is the correct number for DirecTV). The person (Oscar Brown, employee number 23RI636) explained that DirecTV is running a promotion with Amazon, where I could get a $100 gift card and the Premier TV package for $69.99 for 2 years. All I would need to do is go buy an Amazon gift card for $350 and provide the gift card number to the promotions department (at 888-370-0724) to prepay for 5 months of DirecTV. Oscar said the promotion code is CXDTV6670.

I called DirecTV, and they explained that they don’t have any promotions with Amazon, and this isn’t a valid promotion.

What’s really alarming is that the caller had many details on my account. I opened it in late December (less than a month ago), so how were the details leaked?
