Type of a scam Tech Support

Caller verified that I had purchased a software fix for my GPS. I did, for $70. He then went on about our computer had notified them of a possible computer hack. He set me up to give him control of the computer (similar to that of Geek Squad) and showed what appeared to be hack attempts to our files. He went into dialogue I could not follow. Techie terms. He then explained that he could install network security, but it was rather pricey at $2000.

He then asked if we were senior citizens. I stated yes, and he said he could reimburse us $1000. But we needed to pay the $2000. up front. He then took some time away from the phone and came back and loaded what appears to be a cashier’s check for $1000. on your desktop. He the said we could not use the computer until the next day because it would take that long to install the software. In the mean time he had me fill out a check for $2000 and place it in the scanner/printer and had me scan it. Scanner did not work.

So he instructed me to put it in an envelope address it his company and told me to go to the Post Office and mail it priority mail. Our PO was close to closing and I would make it in time. He then went on line and issued a priority mail pickup for the next day. Funny, but true, the next day was Thanksgiving. No mail. That evening I did some investigating. I did not mail the check. I am looking into whether the cashiers check is any good. Am also checking in with Geek Squad.
