Type of a scam Government Grant

Jeffrey called from the United States Treasury Department. He said the department picks certain people every year from different states offering them a $9000 grant to use however you want. I have to pick a store where I can pick up my check. He said my code number was JO235. I didn’t give him any personal info because he said he had a file on me with all my information in it. He said he would talk to the people at the store where I would be picking the check up. Then he asked which store I wanted to pick up the check. I told him I was 80 years old and disabled and wasn’t going to the store. He said what kind of person would pass up this opportunity, and I said I would and he hung up. I’m in 80 years old. I live in a senior building, and I didn’t do it because I remember last year a man in my building had to get to the store to pick up a check, he paid $400 and he never did get a grant. It seems like the elderly in my building fall for just about anything.

I received a robotic voice mail from the above number and the following message was left:

"From United States Treasury Department, this is the final attempt to reach you Treasury Department has filed a lawsuit against you regarding tax deficiency and tax fraud ignoring. This will be an intentional second attempt to avoid federal law for any further information immediately speak to federal agent call back number 831-888-2895. I repeat 831-888-2895. Thank you."

Please NOTE the incorrect name of the government agency (it’s the US Dept of the Treasury as we all know!), and this government agency does have the role of suing private citizens for any tax fraud. Additionally, you’d know if the government were about to sue you and a robocall machine would never be utilized to deliver such confusing syntax ("This will be an intentional second attempt to avoid federal law….." seriously, what does that even mean?)

This is scam to obtain either a prepaid Visa or Master card number from an individual or a personal banking account. If these are unattainable, they attempt to gather personal information.

The person states they are calling from the United States Treasury Department. That my name and number have been selected to receive a 9,000 dollar grant. That I was selected to receive this grant because I pay my taxes and bills on time. That the government is providing this one time grant to 1,500 people.

That I can receive the grant money one of three ways, Money-gram, prepaid Visa or MasterCard, or direct deposit to a current banking account.

When I asked to receive a prepaid Visa or MasterCard, I was advised that I would not be sent a card. That they could only load the money to an existing card that I used.

I then asked to have the money sent via Money-gram. I was advised they could send this to Walgreens, CVS, Wal-Mart, and Krogers. I asked to have the money sent to Wal-Mart.

I was then asked to answer some verification questions. First to verify my name was correct. Then to verify my phone number and to provide my home address, and how old I was as of today?

I asked her to read off what she had, that I would verify if it was correct. She read off my phone number and then asked me to provide the address and age. When I stated that she should have my information if she worked for the government and indeed I had been selected to receive a grant.

She stated that I needed to provide this information in order for her to process the Money-gram. I stated that the government has all my personal information and I would verify if it was correct. Could she read off what she had? She disconnected the call at that time.

I reported this yesterday and did not know how to add to an existing report. I talked with the person who contacted me and gathered more details and wanted to share this information. In total, I have received 12 calls from five different phone numbers. I began receiving the calls yesterday and up to 12:00 pm today. At that time, I blocked all of the numbers from calling my phone. I received a call from a different number this afternoon.

There are a couple of the numbers that the caller ID shows up as a persons name. I called those numbers back to try and have these calls stopped. The call goes straight to a voice mailbox. The person’s name is identified in the voice mail message. Other numbers I attempted to call back and I receive a message that, "This is not a working number" or "Your call cannot be completed as dialed."

The caller ID associated with each number is listed below:

Please make people aware of this scam. I would hate for someone to loose their money or become a victim of identity theft.

Individual stating they are with the United States Treasury Department and the government is providing grants to individuals.

The call comes in through various numbers. The individual on the other line asks to speak with me by name. Then proceeds to tell me she is with the United States Treasury Department and I have been selected to receive a 9,000 dollar grant.

When I ask questions, the call it is disconnected immediately.

I received 5 calls yesterday and have received 3 so far today.

Yesterday, I called the numbers back and they went to what sounded like a personal voice mailbox.

Today when I attempt to call the numbers back, the system states the call cannot be completed as dialed. Although I just received a call from the number one minute earlier.

Below are the caller ID and numbers that appear when I receive the calls.

Called and the guy said he worked for The United States department of Treasury. Stated that I filed my taxes wrong and that they were taking me to court. They gave my address and email address to me stating they sent mail/emails to me, but I never received any. Then he stated he’d "transfer" me to a higher person to work on paying my money that i owed from my 2014 taxes and asked for my credit card number. But when I asked direct questions the guy couldn’t answer them and hung up.

Caller identifies himself as either David Grey or Robert Morris and message is intended to contact me regarding an important action taken by the United States Treasury intending serious attention. Ignoring this will be an intentional second attempt to warrant initial appearance before a magistrate judge or grand jury for a federal criminal offense. Three different numbers have been given.

Wednesday, September 30, 2015 (David Grey) 425.678.3622

Tuesday, February 23, 2016 (Robert Morris) 314.627.0047

Thursday, February 25, 2016 (David Grey) 234.231.0047 (Police called and report was filed with this information)

When the numbers are called, a foreign male answers the phone. When I stated to ask questions, he hangs up. When I try to call again, the phone rings continuously. Not sure what the intent is of the call, since they hang up when questions are asked by me.

Received a call on my cell phone from 0000000000. Although he spoke broken English, his name was Kenny and he was calling from the United States Treasury Department to inform me that they had a check for me in the amount of $7,800.00. "Would I like to receive the funds?" I told him to please mail this to me in writing and I would consider it (duh)! So "Kenny" says "So you’d like the check?" Again I told him yes and since he worked for the US Treasury Department he should have my address on file and I promptly hung up.

Please be aware of this scam! I did not fall for it and I hope no one else does either. Thanks!
