Second Star Group Company Name Spoofing

Type of a scam Employment

I applied for a marketing position with Second Star Group. They emailed me back to say that the position had been filled, but that their CEO was needing a personal assistant right away to help out with a few things while he was out on a business trip. He asked for my name, phone number, and email address. He mailed a check for $2,900 dollars to me and asked me to deposit it into my bank account. He was paying me $500 for this position, and the rest was used to complete the tasks he assigned. I didn’t really see any major red flags up to this point because I know that business people get busy and need help. However, the big red flag for me was that he asked me to buy $2,400 worth of Google Play gift cards. He wanted me to text the pictures of the back of the cards to him after I bought them. They were supposedly going to be used to pay one of his clients — but who really wants to be paid in Google Play cards. Also, why would he need the info from the cards if they were going to his clients. As of right now, the check he sent me has not been cleared through my bank yet and I don’t expect that it will. Luckily, I haven’t lost out on any money of my own yet.
