Type of a scam Debt Collections
These people called my brother-in-law, so I got in touch with them. They said I owe money from a phone bill in 2005 (but there’s no documentation or proof they are willing to show me) on Verizon, who was my carrier up until a year ago w/ no interruption in service, and yet this bill from 2005 was never brought up by Verizon. The scammers said my Social Security wages will be garnished with fees, so now it’s 1K. They said a demand letter was sent to me (no) and it was on my credit report (also no). They had my DOB, Social Security, email and home address. I said send me the paperwork & I’ll have my lawyer friend look at this- they refused. I said this is illegal to call someone up & ask for money without any proof, and she said it’s called arbitration and I should look it up. I don’t see how 14 years later that I’m hearing about an unpaid phone bill & am being sued for it, dropping out of the clear blue sky. Who knows – maybe it was my bill from over a decade ago, but I feel like show me some proof & I will pay, not going by a stranger’s word like this, saying I can see the paperwork after I pay?
