Type of a scam Sweepstakes/Lottery/Prizes

I got a call from someone claiming to be with Publishers Clearing House saying I had won $2.5 Million and a brand new truck, I told them I didn’t want it. He called me back several times and insisted it wasn’t a scam. I called the number back to see if it was a valid number and the same guy picked up and said it was working number and I could trust him. He told me I needed to pay $1000 to get my prize, and I told him I couldn’t pay that. He asked how much I could pay and I said $250. He told me he had a meeting and agreed that if I payed $250 and was serious about wanting the prize they would take it. I went to the store to buy the gift card he told me to, when the cashier scanned the gift card an alert popped up on the register that said ScamPulse.com was warning people about scams using cards like these, I told the guy one the phone, but he swore on this wife and kids that he was legitimate.

Type of a scam Sweepstakes/Lottery/Prizes

a man calls my aging father, sometimes claiming to be Bob, claiming that my father has won a cash prize from publishers clearinghouse. he tells him he needs to go to Wells Fargo Bank and send him $400 for him to deliver the prize. the last time my father fell for it, and the scammer managed to obtain my fathers bank account number and filched $2000 from his account.

the bank helped my father block the caller and changed their account, then notified publishers clearinghouse. the police were notified, as well as publishers clearing house, who obviously denied that they need to be paid to deliver a cash prize. that ended the calls for a while, though my father never recovered his money.

Now the man is calling again. we are concerned that my aged father is going to give away an account number. this time the scammer is calling from a number 876-512-5813, again claiming that my father won a prize and needs to send money so that he can bring my father his prize.

Phone call was at 11:46 on July 28. ID of call was Out of Area. The man identified himself as Dave Fyers, and he had a heavy accent. He gave a phone number of 716-630-9198. My 81 year old husband has faithfully sent in the multiple Publishers Clearing House envelopes for years. He received this call telling him he was won 2 million dollars. I only noticed the call because I heard him arguing with the caller. The man told him in order to receive his money he had to send $878.00 and then the prize money would be released. My husband said he would only believe he had won if he was sent a letter. The caller insisted over and over his call was approved by the BBB. I’m amazed my husband stayed on the line with the caller as long as he did. He only hung up once I found out who was calling. I am worried someone more vulnerable will be conned into sending the money.

He told me I won $2.5 million and a 2020 C class Mercedes. He offered me 3 color choices. He told me my claim number. He asked if I wanted my delivery to be public ( would include TV and radio) or private delivery. He asked questions about my citizenship. He asked the amount in my savings and checking( which I did not give him.) He continually reassured me that this was not a scam. When I asked him for a way to verify what he was telling me, he gave me the following information:

PCH 929-280-2973. Speak with "Dave Sayers" the supposed prize patrol person. At the end he told me there would be a $2500 delivery fee that would be returned to me after the delivery.

I’m filling this report out for my grandma who doesn’t use computers / email. She received a scam phone call stating that she won the Publishers Clearinghouse. The man had my grandma’s name, address and phone number. He stated that she supposedly subscribed over 5 years ago and was recently chosen as a winner. It was suggested that she come up with a password / code so that nobody else could accept these winnings. My grandma persistantly told the man that she thought it was a scam and he reassured her that it wasn’t. My grandma even told the man that her friend was scammed using a similar strategy in which the man continued to reassure her it was legitimate. One tactic that the man used was to build personal rapport through compliments. The man also wanted my grandma to purchase a $50 VISA gift card at Walmart, CVS or Walgreens. My granparents were supposed to purchase the gift card and would be exchanged for the first payment on the winnings. The man stated his name was Patrick Willson (702) 356-3930 – also offered the name of Charlene Wilson if you needed any questions.

I told him that I didn’t feel this was official, but he assured me that it was. He asked if I would be home today to receive my prize. He had my address and, obviously, my phone number. He asked my marital status and if I was retired or employed. I answered those two questions but then he asked if I knew what a wire transfer was. At that point I stated that I was certain that this was a scam and I hung up.

I received a letter in the mail informing me that I had won 2nd prize in the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes for $450,000. With the first initial check along with the letter. But it made me suspicious because they did not want me to tell any 3 rd party until I contacted them. So I Googled Publishers Clearinghouse and found out that they do not send out letters to your door. They only show up at your door with flowers and the great big check. He did not give an address where to send the money at that time, said he would tell when the money was ready to send.

He continued texting back several times daily, asking if the money was ready to send.

On July 18th; he texted again with the instructions; send cash or cashiers check to Thomas Maurice Edah; 10111 Bissonnet Street; Apt 268; Houston, TX 77036. Said to be sure to take a picture of the cash, or the cashier check receipt & text to him before mailing. He stated that it was urgent that the money was sent that day as "The Security Patrol" was ready to deliver his winnings. I phoned Publishers Clearing House to talk to them about it, and they said they never asked for money upfront, I did fill out a scam report on the form they emailed to us. 5-15-19. Short version of what happened: Had phone call to return call regarding a UPS package for delivery. Finally returned call after getting 3 calls. Call was from a "Rev. James Reed". He "swore by God" this was for real. He asked if I had heard of Publishers Clearing House. Then stated I had won $3.5 million, a 2019 Mercedes, and $250,000 payment for life, tax free. (I never said yes). I again asked who he was and he then said that all over the United Sates people were winning from the American Senior Citizen group contest. He had my name, address, and phone number as verification. I continued to question giving vague answers. Finally he said all I had to do was present my "claim card". When I asked how to provide that he said all I had to do was send him a money order to verify my identity and release the claim. At this point I hung up.

It started with a phone call from a Dave Sawyer (heavy accent) explaining how much I had won. He wanted an email address to send me the information on the prize of $8.8M plus a Mercedes sedan. They showed a check from bank of America in that amount and a Pic of a guy holding a big check with myt name on it. There was also an "itemization" if the winnings with a breakout for IRS Processing fee of $984. They needed that amount in a cashiers check sent to someone in Tucson before the payment could be released. I bit. They also had the names of the presenters and a GM for verification. I then received an "IRS" letter with my name misspelled and strange wording needing another $2600 for state and income taxes. That was the red flag for me. I bid them a nasty good bye.

The man gave me his name and ask me to repeat it back to him which I did not. He then asked me to repeat some of the initial information he gave me and I told him that I couldn’t remember. He asked me to write numbers down on a piece of paper. He have me an ID #, a ticket #, a Bar code #, confirmation #, Ref #. Once I had written everything down he asked me to read everything back to him so he could record it for the BBB, Bank of America and someone else that I cannot recall. I told him that I was having problems hearing him and would like to call him right back. He gave me his phone # 571-216-8836 and said his name was Andy Golderg. I called him back and he answered so I know it is a legitimate phone number although he did not answer with a company name but it was his voice. He wanted me to repeat the numbers back to him and I again said that I was having phone issues and asked if he would send me the information and I would get it notarized and sent back. I asked him if he had my address and he said yes. I asked him to repeat it to me so that I made sure that it went to the proper address. I received a phone call from phone number 876-528-1819. They claimed that I had won $2.7 million and a 2019 Range Rover. They claimed the prize was sponsored by Bank of America. In order to redeem my prize, I needed to go to Walmart and send $695.89 via a Walmart-to-Walmart transfer to Shenika Williams. After I sent the money, I would need to call them back and provide my receipt number in order to set up the instructions to obtain my prize. When I asked why I needed to send the money, they stated that the winner was required to pay .1% of the winnings and that this was the only way to receive the prize. They claimed that they were from Publisher’s Clearing House and that I was one of 3 winners they had choose that month. If I did not claim my prize, it would go to the Unclaimed Prize Department.

Last week I received a phone call from a different number claiming that I had won $2.5 million and a 2019 Mercedes Benz. When I asked if the two winnings were affiliated, I was told no.

I spoke with Mr. Donald Johnson and he transferred me to his secretary, Eileen Moskavitch. Eileen claimed to be based in Las Vegas, but I could hear a foreign language in the background. When I asked her why I heard a foreign language, she said that our lines must have gotten crossed. When I told Eileen that I needed to go, she insisted that I send the money as quickly as possible so that I could have access to the money.

I called them back to tell them I had confirmed with the ScamPulse.com that it was a scam. They were insistent that they were legitimate and that I should claim my prize as quickly as possible. After speaking with BBB, I know this is not a legitimate opportunity and I am submitting this report hoping that no one falls victim to their persuasive tactics.

After speaking with BBB, I actually received a follow up phone call from Eileen. She wanted to know if I had a chance to go to Walmart to pay the taxes for the prize money. I told her that I did not want to move forward because when you win something, you should not have pay money for it. I told her that I hoped she realized what she was doing was scamming people and that she got into a more legitimate line of business.

He asked them to meet him there asap. Fortunately others had recounted similar experiences online and my parents suffered no losses.

The male identified himself as being with Publishers Clearing House. He went on to say I had won over a million dollars, and a Mercedes. He asked if anyone would be at home, and also said paperwork would be available at ‘Walmart’ to fill out. Of course I knew it was a scam, I said I would look over any official mail I received, and continued to be uncooperative…. he quickly hung up … just as I had expected. Be aware.

They called claiming I had won money from Publishers Clearing House, also claiming that the FBI was on the line, recording and listening in to the call. They said they would arrive at my door in 45 minutes to give me the check of $8.5 million, a 2017 black GMC Denali, and that I could claim $5,000 at a local Walmart. Eventually they said that I must first pay $450 to the IRS before I could claim anything. When I asked for them to confirm their legitimacy they put their "manager" on the phone, who proceeded to yell at me asking if I really wanted to claim the prize or not. Any mention of what PCH uses to confirm legitimacy of the contact, was further met by aggression.

I was supposed to let the caller know which CVS I would be going to. I went to CVS and asked if anyone had been into the CVS looking for me. CVS said no one had been to CVS looking for me. I called the caller back and he said no one had been to CVS as their phones were down. I then received a call from Donald Johnson and I told him I called Publisher’s Clearing House and Publisher’s Clearing House stated it was a scam. Donald said oh no this is not a scam. This evening (9/23/16) I received a call from Publishers Clearing House in Washington DC saying I had won $2.5 million which would be delivered next week by Bobby Smith ID # 5509, PCH manager Edna Wright ID#3602, FBI agents Dave Brown and David Anderson. All I had to do is send a $299 certified check from Walmart Western Union to Shion Smikle, attorney for PCH in Jamaica, Jamaica. Mark Myers from PCH in Washington DC made the call to me from phone number – 876-359-8017. Needless to say — I did not run to Walmart. The $299 was suppose to be my portion of the taxes for the IRS —- PCH would pay the remaining taxes. I told Mr. Myers that I would have to call my attorney and accountant which I couldn’t do until Monday, and the ScamPulse.com before I sent money. He told me the ScamPulse.com number to call is: 876-512-1127……I didn’t call —- the whole thing seemed like a scam and I didn’t fall for it but felt someone should know calls like this one are being made. PCH should know also.

He asked that I give $485 for a legalization fee that would be reimbursed to me, he said he would need that in order to approve and send the prize patrol to my residence. I informed him not I or anyone would be giving him any money without some form of documentation first. he continued to attempt to have me send money via western union regarding a legal fee needed by the state of Wisconsin to legalize the money I would have won. I told him absolutely not at which time he hung up on me. I called him back and it went to a voicemail that only said what number I was calling and not a business or anything identifying the owner of that number, I called back again and he answered this time identifying himself as PCH representative Mr. Green. I told him I was going to report him and asked for his supervisor or some kind of PCH number to call to confirm who he was. He told me at that time he had to go to the bathroom, I said then transfer me to another representative or I would call the authorities, he then began to insult me and became agitated and swearing and insulting me before hanging up.

Phone call from Jamaica saying I won the publishers clearing house sweepstakes. 1 million dollars, $5,000 a month for the rest of your life. Also included was a brand new truck. Insurance fully paid for 1 year. They had me right down a bunch of confirmation codes, saying that they would stay on line till I had the money in my hand. They then had me drive to a walmart or wal greens once there, they wanted me to go in and get a form to wire them money so they could verify for tax purposes. At that point I called the ScamPulse.com. They informed me it was a scam. When I got back on the line with the guy, he had hung up. They insisted while they were on the phone, that the ScamPulse.com was on the phone with them. When I asked to speak to them, they pretended to transfer me. The guy that picked up sounded like the same guy I had just spoken to. After I questioned the legitimacy of it, he told me to go to a K-mart and buy a G.P.S., not really sure why.

  1. Got a call from a John Tyler badge# 007654715, phone# 775-659-6406. He said I won $3.5 and a 2020 Ford bronco, (not even a 2022), he was from publisher’s clearing house, I already knew this is a scam, so I played along, when he asked me about getting a visa gift card, I told him I have no money he continued to ask me how much money can I put on it, I said $0, I have $0. He had to sadly give the prize to someone else. Hahaha hahaha

  2. I just received a call from John Peterson (yeah, right) from Publisher’s Clearinghouse. I didn’t answer, and he called twice in succession. Phone number is from Texas and I’m located in London, Ontario, Canada. Number is 512-543-3249. These scammers are the lowest of the low.

  3. Now I received a call from a John Mason and he was posing as a PCH agent and claimed I had won 7 million dollars and a brand new dodge ram pick truck and he gave me a confirmation # 9094270809 and this was pose to be the order # he gave me as well EKB662005051647 And he even said I will have a free gas card for 1 year and free tires for 1 year and I have state farm insurance and I pose to go get a one vanilla gift card and put 500.00 dollars on the card and call him back and give him just the last 12 digits and that call was from Tennessee 1-931-422-8874 Mr.John Mason I even ask him y can’t he take out 500.00 that’s needed and send me the rest I told I thought pch show up in person he said we will show up when u send the 500.00 I did report it to the real PCH 1-877-379-3377 that’s how I reported a suspicious scam
