Complaint about playperks.net concerning deceptive practices.

On numerous occasions I had seen an add on Facebook for free streaming of the Musical Hamilton on or around Friday July 3rd weekend. Thinking this was associated with the Disney company who owns the rights I selected an add for our family to see Hamilton for FREE. The link took me away from Facebook to another website linked to playperks.net advertising FREE viewing of Hamilton. It simply asked me to set up an account to be able to view it. It then required me to enter a credit card to hold BUT said that I would NOT be charged. Still believing that this was still tied to Disney who had been advertising Hamilton I then proceded to the next screen. At this point I was offered a membership which would cost me a fee of $39.95!! At this time I decided not to procede and did not confirm setup BUT the website already had my card information on file! I immediately closed out of the browser believing since I did not confirm my membership that this would be a reputable company that would not charge me.

Between then and July 9th I received no such confirmation from playperks.net that an account had been established and expecting no charges. I never tried to access the site again for any additional content. However when I checked my credit card statement on July 9th I immediately noticed a charge of $39.95 to my account! I then contacted my bank immediately to dispute the charge but was told that since I had given my card info (for a free streaming of Hamilton) they could not pursue it as fraud. They then advised me to close my credit card which I did and to contact playperks.net immediately. Actually while waiting on the phone with my bank I went online to playperks.com and immediately closed my account, receiving a confirmation email as well. I then on the advise of my bank called the customer service number of playperks.net at 1-877-249-6342 to confirm the account closing. I was directed to their automated call tree and told them I wanted to cancel but instead of being directed to a person I was given a confirmation number of 65806019. The call terminated conviently in "App error cant connect!"

I then called back because I wanted to speak to a human customer service rep to confirm. On my second trip through the automated call tree I requested Customer Service in the automation. I had to reenter the confirmation number that I was previously given and on THREE different occasions I was asked to confirm "YES!" twice about canceling and wanting to speak to a human being! Finally I was connected to a woman who stated that her name was Maya. I clearly explaned to her the events of July 3rd that deceptively led to a FREE account being setup in my name for the viewing of Hamilton and then not proceding any further once I was notified of a $39.95 charge to my account! She informed me that in the fine print their is a notification of enrolement for the FREE account after six days unless you cancel. I told her that I did not confirm membership after being notified of any enrolement charges and by the time you see notification of any charges your credit card info is already filed by the company that she represents. I immediately told her that I would be filing a complaint with the BBB, Illinois Attorney General and the FCC about this for the following reasons.

This was clearly a trap to pull in customers looking for Hamilton streaming who Disney was advertising at the same time with Disney plus. (I am not sure what their operational agreement is with Disney to stream their content at this time.) Also more than once the site playperks.net clearly markets it as a FREE streaming event. You are then entering your credit card (that they state will NOT be charnged) to gain access to the event. Then once notified of the membership fee on the following page even thought I dont confirm or consent to their disclosure of the charge they are going forward with creating and activating my account (Wells Fargo comes to mind!). They then do NOT send me notification of the account setup OR the charge to my credit card! If I had not been watching the account I might not have seen the charges until I received my next bill for August!

Upon double checking my account after dealing with their customer service I am now seeing a second item from them for $39.95. Unless this is my refund which I demanded then they are billing me for a second time. I then contact my bank for details about what was posted and to them it does appear that playperks.net is reversing the charge to my account so hopefully this will be my last experience with them! They are clearly trying to catch unsuspecting customers in charging them before they notice the bill on their cards. The site is desgined to funnel people towards some FREE offering and as soon as they step through that door they are billed with automatic enrolement into an account they didnt intend to sign up for. The charge to the customer should be upfront and they should have to accept the charge, NOT OPT OUT. I am concerned that they are also not emailing customers on account setup and acceptance, and then they are clearly not telling them thru a receipt or notification when the charge goes through. I am sure their lawyers get paid well to defend these deceptive practices but they are clearly trying to take advantage of customers!

For reference I am also including links where there are other customers complaining about this.
