Type of a scam Debt Collections
I got a phone call a few weeks ago and they asked if I was (me), stupidly said "yes". (Heard after to never say yes on a call you’re unsure of!) then I was hung up on.
She called back today and I asked her to explain the "suit" she was working with my name on it. She asked me to verify information she had of mine. She has my last 4 of my social, name, old address, old email , and family members names. She said I took out s loan in 2012 and haven’t paid it back so they were pursuing criminal charges against me and if I didn’t pay her something today they would send papers out to "serve" me. She kept saying a county in which I no longer reside… she also got very rude when I told her I wasn’t going to be paying anything until I confirmed her story. She then hung up on me again. She called back stating if I decided to not pay that would mean I wasn’t complying and I would be served with a felony charge! Theft by deception. I have a family member in law enforcement and called him to ask. He verified that there was no way they could press a felony charge against me, and if they couldn’t give me a written statement. I looked up online and there are multiple cases similar, different company names but the phone numbers are always the same.
