imposter Sergeant San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office

Kristen –

Victim Location 94110

Total money lost $1,500

Type of a scam Other

Scammer posed as sergeant for sheriffs office and alleged that I was in trouble for failing to appear for jury duty and that warrants had been issued for my arrest (gave warrant numbers, ID number, address, phone number. Number did call back to sheriffs office). Rest of scam was designed to keep me on the line and prevent me from reaching out to anyone. I was “led” to my bank and then to the purchase of MoneyPak and then gave the ID numbers of the cards. The scam became obvious in that it went on and was quite elaborate and finally I caught on. I’m an expert in trauma and I was reminded first hand of the power of the predator and fear for my livelihood (which depends on not having any criminal or even civil record). I was found through a professional network. Later I was informed at the police department that these matters would not have been handled by phone. Never having had a warrant out for my arrest, I wasn’t familiar with the details and much of the scam was not so different from actual practice (like speed cameras and paying the fine to avoid a “true” penalty on one’s drivers license).
